MAKASSAR (ISL News) - President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo inaugurated the National Strategic Project, Makassar New Port (MNP) on Thursday (22/2/2024).

Th
e inauguration was attended by BUMN Minister Erick Thohir, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono, and Pelindo Main Director Arif Suhartono.

The inaugurated MNP Stages 1A, 1B and 1C pier have a total length of 1,280 meters and were built by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) on an area of 52 hectares to support economic growth in the eastern region of Indonesia.

The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, said that competition between countries is currently really tight. Who has good efficiency will win the match and competition. Ten years ago, national logistics costs were at 24%, even though other countries had 9-12% due to lack of integration between ports and industrial areas.

“Now, our logistics costs have fallen by approximately 14%. "It has fallen a lot but is still slightly higher than other countries and this is our collective homework," said President Jokowi in his speech.

President Jokowi explained that Makassar New Port is the second largest port after Tanjung Priuk Port with a depth of 16 meters and is the deepest port which is very good for large ships carrying containers to dock.

The presence of a new port in Makassar with a current total capacity of 2.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) containers is also a breath of fresh air for shipping companies. Because with a depth of -16 meters LWS (Low Water Springs), the MNP pier can accommodate large post-Panamax generation ships which are usually used for direct calls or direct shipping abroad.

"The old Makassar New Port had a capacity of 750 thousand TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year and now it is 2.5 million TEUs per year, this is a very high jump. "We will see later how the development progress of this port will become a large port in Eastern Indonesia which is expected to streamline logistics costs in our homeland," added President Jokowi.

The Minister of BUMN, Erick Thohir, said, in accordance with the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia 3 years ago, that the strengths of BUMN ports must be united to become global players, increase efficiency and encourage reductions in national logistics costs. Therefore, with the initial consolidation of Pelindo I, II, III and IV into Pelindo, ports in Indonesia are now one of the 20 best ports in the world out of all ports in Southeast Asia.

"We have increased the loading and unloading speed of port containers in Indonesia, which was previously an average of 20 boxes (per crane per hour) to 34 boxes (per crane per hour), which has brought ship berthing times down from previously an average of 38 hours now. it has been 22 hours, meaning this is an extraordinary acceleration. "We also continue to organize 122 ports in Indonesia through integrated port system monitoring," explained Erick.

The Ministry of BUMN is collaborating with the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of PUPR to present 3 international ports by integrating the surrounding infrastructure and integrating several industrial areas to become part of the port ecosystem. Therefore, the presence of Makassar New Port is very important as it is a world gateway for the Eastern Indonesia Region.

"We continue to consolidate from a financial perspective. Thank God (Pelindo) currently has a profit of IDR 3.9 trillion and this MNP investment is independent from Pelindo itself worth IDR 5.4 trillion and continues to gradually reach IDR 10 trillion," added Erick.

President Director of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo, Arif Suhartono, said that his party was presenting the MNP National Strategic Project (PSN) to support the government's efforts to continue to encourage economic growth, especially in the eastern region of Indonesia.

The construction of MNP Phases 1A, 1B and 1C absorbs investment worth IDR 5.4 trillion and is still continuing with the procurement of loading and unloading equipment, additional facilities and development of MNP Phase 1D which will be carried out in stages according to needs and the market with an investment budget of up to IDR 10 trillion.

The current facilities in the MNP mega project are 6 units of Container Crane (CC), 16 units of Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG), 2 units of Reach Stacker (RS), 15 units of Terminal Tractor, 1 unit of 2 ton Forklift and 392 units of Reefer Plugs. All equipment supports the green port program or is electrified and uses electricity.

“MNP has also been equipped with an Integrated Planning and Control Room (PnC), an innovative step to centrally monitor and control ship, terminal, container and logistics services. "This transformation aims to increase service efficiency and support national logistics competitiveness with a scope of supervision that is not only limited to Makassar, but also covers other regions such as Kendari, Balikpapan, to Maluku and Papua." explained Arif.

With 24/7 or 24 hour service for 7 days, the presence of MNP, which will later be integrated with a large-scale industrial area and also a railway connecting cities in Sulawesi, is expected to be able to boost Indonesia's economic growth at large.
