The Transportation and Warehousing Sector Grew by 5.65 Percent, with Diversification a New Growth Engine for Logistics Players

JAKARTA (ISL News) - According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, the Indonesian economy grew 5.29 percent annually in the second quarter of 2026. The transportation and warehousing sector grew 5.65 percent and contributed 6.16 percent to GDP, indicating an opportunity for logistics companies to strengthen their growth strategies.

Foreign trade also presents opportunities. Exports from January to May 2026 reached USD 115.36 billion, up 3.02 percent year-on-year, while imports reached USD 111.33 billion, growing 15.24 percent. The trade balance recorded a surplus of USD 4.03 billion.

In response to these developments, the Logistics Executive Forum 2026 was held at the HARRIS Convention Hall in Summarecon Bekasi last week (August 12th). Organized by Inovisi and Beyond Core Academy, with support from ALFI's West Java chapter and Supply Chain Indonesia (SCI), the forum targeted industry leaders and received a positive response.

Berty Argiyantari, Founder of Inovisi Business Consultant and Co-founder of Beyond Core Academy, initiated the forum to encourage logistics companies to find new sources of growth through sector diversification, taking into account market potential, capabilities, and risks.

Setijadi, CEO and Founder of SCI, explained that the growth of the transportation and warehousing sector must be viewed in conjunction with changes in demand, trade, technology, and policy. Companies should not simply focus on volume; they should also identify prospective customer segments that require logistics services and demonstrate business resilience.

Diversification can be directed to the food and beverage, retail and e-commerce, manufacturing, agribusiness, pharmaceutical, and cold chain sectors. Sector selection is based on market size and growth, product flow, competition, investment needs, and network suitability.

Implementation requires opportunity mapping, capability assessment, priority sector selection, solution development, and market testing. Gradual expansion allows companies to build their portfolio without disrupting core services and cash flow.

Yan Hendry Jauwena, Chief Sales Officer of CJ Logistics Indonesia, explained that diversification must translate into a clear business model. The company needs to define its value proposition, customer segments, service coverage, revenue sources, cost structure, and partnerships.

Operational readiness is crucial for success. The capabilities of human resources, processes, technology, assets, networks, governance, and service standards must align with the needs of the target sector to prevent opportunities from creating unmanageable complexity.

Implementation should be conducted through pilot projects with measurable indicators, including revenue, margins, asset utilization, service quality, and customer retention. Evaluations serve as the basis for expanding, adjusting, or terminating initiatives.

Trismawan Sanjaya, Secretary General of the DPP ALFI, emphasized that diversification increases a company's risk. Market, customer credit, investment, operational, technological, regulatory, safety, and reputational risks need to be identified early in planning.

Each sector selection needs to be accompanied by risk tolerance limits, scenarios, mitigation measures, responsible parties, and monitoring mechanisms. This approach helps management balance growth ambitions with the ability to absorb potential losses.
