PENANG MALAYSIA (ISL News) - Women in Maritime Indonesia (WIMA INA) has once again demonstrated its role on the international stage. This time, Wima INA, through its General Chairperson, Dr. Chandra Motik, SH, emphasized its commitment to supporting efforts to protect the marine environment in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS).
This was conveyed by Chandra Motik at the 16th Cooperation Forum (CF-16), which brought together coastal states, user countries, international institutions, industry, and civil society organizations. The forum, part of the Cooperative Mechanism on the Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, took place in Penang, Malaysia, from September 29 to October 2, 2025.
Chandra Motik said that protecting the marine environment cannot rely solely on the role of the government. "The law provides the framework, but real progress depends on human collaboration, including the active involvement of women and communities. WIMA Indonesia believes women can play a crucial role in maintaining marine sustainability, particularly in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, which are vital global trade routes," she said .
In a session themed "Enhancing Marine Environmental Protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore," WIMA Indonesia emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, including its existing partnership with WIMA Malaysia and industry stakeholders. Going forward, WIMA Indonesia is ready to contribute through various environmental programs, such as public awareness campaigns, strengthening the capacity of maritime women, and cross-border collaboration in marine pollution prevention.
The CF-16 Forum serves as a crucial platform for coastal states (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore) and international partners to discuss strategic maritime issues, from navigational safety and marine pollution to the energy transition. The forum reaffirms that protecting marine resources is a shared responsibility and a legacy that must be safeguarded for future generations.
"With the spirit of collaboration and the power of women in the maritime sector, we at WIMA Indonesia are ready to contribute, collaborate, and inspire. Together with coastal states, user countries, and international partners, we believe SOMS can remain safe, clean, resilient, and sustainable," concluded Chandra Motik.
