MAKASSAR (ISL News) - As a commitment of PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim (SPJM), one of the subholdings of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) to be part of the Joint Mangrove Rehabilitation program with the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, SPJM has carried out mangrove planting in Borong Kaluku Hamlet, Borimasunggu Village, Maros Regency.
PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim also helps communities with community empowerment programs. In addition, the mangrove planting and community development program is in line with the three priority areas of BUMN TJSL, namely education, environment and UMKM development.
The SPJM mangrove forest rehabilitation is expected to be beneficial from economic, social and environmental aspects, especially in supporting climate change mitigation efforts by increasing carbon storage and absorption to support the achievement of national contribution targets.
Mangroves with the type of Rizhopora sp that have been planted in an area of 3 hectares last year, have now grown, with the effectiveness of the growth of the planting area (percentage of the area that has been grown by mangroves) of 87.33%. The percentage of mangrove growth for almost a year has been very good, with growth reaching 46.89%.
In addition to preventing abrasion, the planted mangroves have absorbed CO2 in the atmosphere through the process of photosynthesis, making it appropriate as an effort to overcome the impacts of climate change. After calculations were carried out by the Carbon Storage Calculation Team, data was obtained that for 1 month, it can be concluded that the SPJM mangrove planting has the potential for carbon absorption of 3.09 tons of CO2 eq/ha.
Not only that, based on the results of carbon storage modeling of mangrove vegetation resulting from the rehabilitation of PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim covering an area of 3 ha for 30 years based on the growth rate of the diameter of Rizhopora sp. which is 0.45 cm/year, it shows that the 10-year projection of carbon storage of mangrove vegetation is around 21.55 tons, the age of 20 years of carbon storage is 107.12 tons and the age of 30 years becomes 273.71 tons. This indicates that the mangroves resulting from the rehabilitation of PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim play a very important role in storing carbon as an effort to mitigate climate change.
Tubagus Patrick, SVP of SPJM Corporate Secretariat explained, "The results of this mangrove rehabilitation are quite good, but of course it is necessary to carry out replanting in the empty planting hole areas and also enrichment in planting holes that contain less than 20 seedlings."
“This is certainly important to increase the success and sustainability of the mangrove rehabilitation program and also increase carbon absorption,” Patrick continued.
SPJM Mangrove Rehabilitation Efforts are certainly continuing where on September 23, 2024, SPJM again carried out planting by expanding the planting area around the previous location so that the positive impact is wider and more optimal. SPJM is committed to continuing to be part of Mangrove rehabilitation as an effort to overcome the effects of climate change.
