JAKARTA (ISL News)
 - Business actors are urging the government to immediately enforce the obligation of halal certification for food and beverage products because the regulation has been in law for quite some time.

"We urge the government to immediately implement mandatory halal-certified products. Because the socialization period has been too long. It's been five years. What are they doing," said the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Container Depot Association (Asdeki) Khairul Mahalli in a written statement in Jakarta, Sunday (6/10/2024).

Halal certification rules in Indonesia are regulated in Law No. 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance (JPH). The regulation states that all products entering, circulating and traded in Indonesia must be halal certified.

"Our interests are not only related to religion, but also health. Where in the regulations the products produced must have health guarantees for many people," said Mahalli.

He said that the regulation should be implemented because it concerns the livelihood of many people and the interests of all parties.

"Indonesia should also be at the forefront of implementing this considering that we have the largest Muslim population in the world. We should not just be spectators of halal products being implemented in other countries," he said.

For this reason, his party is pushing for the mandatory halal certification guarantee regulation to be implemented immediately without any doubt.

"We strongly support its immediate implementation. We are also optimistic that if this is implemented, it will be the most advanced and best in terms of logistics," he said.

His party also supports the mandatory halal certification rule which will have a positive impact on the container depot sector. Because every container that previously carried chemicals and so on must be sterile based on JPH rules.

Products that must be halal certified do not only include food and beverage products, but also raw materials, food additives and auxiliary materials for food and beverage products.

Business actors who violate halal certification obligations can be subject to sanctions such as withdrawing goods from circulation, freezing operations and even a fine of IDR 2 billion.

Halal certification is valid for four years. Before the validity period expires, business actors are advised to extend it.

The obligation to obtain halal certification is regulated in Government Regulation (PP) No. 39 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of the Halal Product Assurance Sector.

Article 140 of this regulation stipulates that the phased implementation of the obligation to have halal certification for food products, beverages, slaughtered products, and slaughtering services will start from October 17, 2019 to October 17, 2024.
