SURABAYA (ISL News) – PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) marked the completion of its ongoing terminal equipment and facilities renovation program. With the operation of four electric quay container cranes (e-QCC) and 14 electric rubber-tyred gantries (e-RTG), which utilize electricity as their primary power source, TPS is now entering a service enhancement phase to deliver more productive, reliable, and responsive operations to the evolving needs of its users.

The completion of the rejuvenation program was announced at the TPS Expose 2026 event held on Tuesday (July 7, 2026). This event provided a dialogue between the company and regulators, shipping companies, service users, logistics associations, exporters, importers, and other port stakeholders. In addition to outlining the company's operational progress, TPS also outlined various improvement measures taken following the completion of the terminal equipment rejuvenation process.

TPS President Director, Wahyu Widodo, stated that the successful completion of the rejuvenation program was inseparable from the support of all parties, especially customers who continued to place their trust in TPS during the transition period.

" We express our appreciation and gratitude to all service users who have shown their understanding, patience, and trust during the equipment rejuvenation process. We understand that during the transition period, customers will experience a number of operational adjustments. Therefore, after the rejuvenation process is complete, it will be a momentum for TPS to provide better services . TPS also expresses gratitude for the support of the authorized agencies so that the process can be monitored and ensured together to strengthen services in the Tanjung Perak Surabaya Main Port area, " he said.

As a key logistics gateway, TPS continues to strengthen its infrastructure and operational equipment to ensure the terminal's readiness to accommodate growing container flows and global trade developments. The addition of four new e-QCC units will enhance the terminal's ability to serve large vessels with higher quayside productivity. Meanwhile, the addition of 14 new E-RTG units will strengthen yard operations through faster container movement and more optimal  yard management.

More than simply adding equipment, the electric-powered equipment upgrade program is expected to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, increase energy efficiency, and help reduce carbon emissions from terminal operations. This step aligns with TPS and Pelindo Group's commitment to creating a more environmentally friendly logistics ecosystem and supporting the sustainable development agenda in the port sector.

" Our renovations are not only focused on increasing service capacity but also supporting TPS's transformation into a sustainable terminal. The operation of electricity-based e-RTG and e-QCC is TPS's step in reducing the terminal's operational carbon footprint. This way, customers not only receive more productive and reliable services but also become part of a greener logistics ecosystem ," said Bayu Setyadi, TPS's Senior Commercial Manager.

The rejuvenation program was not without its challenges. The entire process of installation, testing, system integration, and commissioning of the new equipment was carried out while the terminal's operations continued to serve customer needs. This situation required careful operational management to ensure the project ran on schedule without significantly disrupting service continuity.

TPS also continues to ensure the readiness of human resources and operational systems to optimize the use of new equipment from day one. Various operator training processes, operational simulations, safety testing, and work procedure adjustments are being carried out in stages to ensure the equipment can operate safely and optimally.

" Our biggest challenge is maintaining a balance between the rejuvenation work and the ongoing service requirements that must be met daily. Therefore, the entire process is being carried out in stages and in a planned manner. Our focus is not only on completing the equipment rejuvenation, but also on ensuring terminal operations continue and that customers remain served ," Bayu added.

Through the TPS Expose 2026 forum, a number of stakeholders provided input that TPS should consider when developing future service improvement steps.

The Head of the Tanjung Perak Customs and Excise Office emphasized the importance of synergy between all parties in accelerating the flow of goods, including in the management of the Container Freight Station (CFS). He also emphasized the importance of red-lane goods withdrawal services (SPJM), both in the long room area and at inspection locations, which are expected to be continuously improved to support service acceleration.

On the same occasion, Customs and Excise also reminded service users of the importance of compliance with the Goods Readiness Notification (PKB) submission. Delays in PKB submission often prevent inspectors from promptly scheduling inspections even though containers are already at the designated location. This situation has the potential to impact dwell time and overall service effectiveness. This needs to be ensured, especially since Tanjung Perak Port has maintained a dwell time that exceeds the national standard .

TPS welcomes this input and is committed to strengthening coordination with Customs, Quarantine, shipping companies, forwarders, and goods owners to ensure a more integrated and efficient service process.

Similar feedback was also conveyed by a number of service users who hoped that increasing terminal capacity through new equipment would have a direct impact on improving receiving and delivery services, including accelerating the handling of containers requiring quarantine inspections and services in the CFS area.

" For us, true success is when customers feel the benefits of every improvement we make. Therefore, after the upgrade process is complete, TPS's next priority will be to provide a better service experience for customers through more productive and effective operations ," said Bayu.

In addition to improving service quality, the presence of new equipment is also projected to boost terminal throughput growth . To address this potential increase in container throughput, TPS has prepared various measures to manage terminal traffic, optimize yard space, organize vehicle flow, and strengthen the use of digital systems to ensure the smooth flow of goods to and from the port.

As part of the Pelindo Group, TPS will continue its operational transformation through infrastructure improvements, service digitalization, and strengthening a customer-centric service culture. TPS believes that efficient and competitive ports can only be achieved through close collaboration between terminal operators, regulators, and all logistics players.

" The completion of this renovation process is the first step towards better service. We have listened to customer feedback, understood the challenges they face, and are committed to making service improvement a top priority. With the support of upgraded facilities and equipment and collaboration with all stakeholders, TPS is ready to serve again by providing more reliable and productive services and supporting the smooth flow of national logistics ," Bayu concluded.
