BATAM INDONESIA (ISL News) - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo conducted a Soft Operational Launching of NTAA (Nipah Transfer Anchorage Area) at Harbour Bay Ferry Port, Riau Islands, as the initial step in operating strategic port services in Nipa Waters. This activity is a follow-up to the granting of a concession permit by the Ministry of Transportation to Pelindo on May 6, 2026 for the provision and management of port operations in the Nipa Waters concession area.

Pelindo President Director, Achmad Muchtasyar, said that the operation of NTAA is a strategic step in strengthening Indonesia's role in international shipping routes, especially in the Malacca Strait area, which is one of the busiest sea trade routes in the world.

"The Strait of Malacca is one of the world's major shipping lanes, holding a highly strategic position in global trade. Given Indonesia's geographical location, we should play a greater role in the international maritime services ecosystem, not only as a transit nation but also as a competitive and value-added maritime service provider," said Achmad.

The Strait of Malacca is known as one of the world's most important shipping lanes, connecting the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, and is traversed by thousands of international vessels annually. This position has made the region a growing hub for various international maritime services, including ship-to-ship transfer (STS) services.

According to Achmad, the development of services in Nipa Waters is an important momentum for Indonesia to strengthen its national presence in global trade routes while increasing the competitiveness of the national maritime sector.

"The development of NTAA is not just about developing the port business, but also part of an effort to strengthen Indonesia's position in the international logistics and trade chain. We hope this service will provide added economic value while strengthening national maritime connectivity," he continued.

Port services there include ship-to-ship transfer (STS), vessel services, and floating storage. Pelindo will develop operational support in accordance with international safety and service standards.

Achmad also expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Transportation and all stakeholders who have supported the NTAA development process until the soft launch.

"We express our gratitude for the support and trust shown by the government and all relevant stakeholders. Moving forward, we also request the support and collaboration of all parties to ensure the smooth, safe operation of the NTAA and its optimal benefits for strengthening the national maritime sector," Achmad concluded.
