Collaborating with the RW 03 Gotong Royong Perak Barat Waste Bank, TPS Increases Waste Management Literacy of Residents of RW 10 Sidotopo Wetan

SURABAYA (ISL News) – PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS), a subsidiary of Subholding Pelindo Terminal Petikemas (SPTP), continues to strengthen its role in supporting community-based environmental management through educational activities on waste bank management for residents of RW 10, Sidotopo Wetan Village, Surabaya on Thursday (4/23) at the Colombo Football Field, Surabaya. This activity is part of an effort to share best practices in the management of the Gotong Royong Waste Bank of RW 03, Perak Barat Village, which has been running sustainably.


This waste bank management education was held on Thursday (April 23) at the Gotong Royong Waste Bank in RW 03, Perak Barat Village, Surabaya. Representatives from RW 10, Sidotopo Village, conducted a study visit to observe firsthand the well-organized management of the community-based waste bank, which has provided economic benefits to residents.


The Gotong Royong Waste Bank of RW 03, Perak Barat Village, is the result of a collaboration between PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya and Subholding Pelindo Terminal Petikemas (SPTP), which was initiated in 2024. Over time, this waste bank has developed into a productive, participatory, community-based waste management model that has a real impact on improving the quality of the environment and the economy of residents.


Through educational sessions and interactive discussions, the managers of the Gotong Royong Waste Bank (RW 03 Perak Barat) shared their experiences regarding the waste bank's formation process, organizational governance, waste sorting and collection mechanisms, and strategies for developing recycled materials. Participants also gained insights into the importance of community involvement, discipline in waste sorting, and efficient and transparent administrative management.


TPS Corporate Secretary, Erika Asih Palupi, said that this educational activity is part of TPS' ongoing commitment to implementing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the environmental and community empowerment pillars.


"We encourage mutual learning among residents. The success of the Gotong Royong Waste Bank in RW 03, Perak Barat Village, is expected to inspire other areas, including RW 10, Sidotopo Wetan Village, to build independent, structured, and economically impactful waste management systems," said Erika.


He added that the TPS not only plays a role in providing facilities and assistance, but also encourages the creation of a collaborative ecosystem that allows waste bank management practices to be replicated in various areas around the port.


Through this educational activity, residents of RW 10, Sidotopo Village, are expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of the steps involved in establishing and managing a waste bank, from institutional and operational aspects to developing added value from sorted waste. In the long term, this initiative is expected to increase public awareness and participation in waste management at the source and strengthen the circular economy at the community level.


TPS continues to strive to support various community-based environmental initiatives as part of the company's sustainability journey, while also making a real contribution to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for local residents.


The Head of West Perak, Saefudin Zuhri, appreciated the educational activity as a positive step in encouraging inter-regional collaboration in the City of Surabaya.

"We welcome the residents of RW 10, Sidotopo Wetan Village, who are eager to learn firsthand. The Gotong Royong Waste Bank of RW 03, Perak Barat Village, has grown thanks to the active involvement of residents and support from various parties. We hope this good practice can be replicated so that more areas can manage waste independently, orderly, and with economic value," he said.
