PARE PARE (ISL News) – PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) through PT Pelindo Multi Terminal (SPMT) Parepare Branch officially implemented the use of X-ray machines and barrier gates at the Nusantara Parepare Passenger Terminal on Wednesday (8/1/2025). This initiative aims to improve security and comfort for port service users, in line with Pelindo's vision as an integrated port that prioritizes safety.
"This is a strategic step in supporting the government's efforts to improve the quality of port services, especially in the field of security. With the presence of X-ray, the process of sorting passengers and luggage will be more thorough so that safety during the voyage is more guaranteed," said Branch Manager of SPMT Parepare Branch, I Nengah Suryana Jendra.
The inauguration with the theme "Go Live Implementation of X-ray and Barrier Gate" is a new milestone for the security system at the Port of Parepare. This system has been tested during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) period of 2024-2025 and has proven effective in increasing inspection efficiency. In addition, Jendra revealed a plan for digital transformation in the port payment system.
"We will implement a cashless transaction system to minimize the use of cash. In the future, all payments will be digital-based," he added.
SPMT Parepare Branch involves various parties to support the implementation of this new security system. KPN Police personnel will assist in security and operational supervision. In addition, Port Health will tighten supervision to prevent the spread of the virus through the port, while Parepare Quarantine ensures inspection of animals entering this area.
SPMT Parepare Branch also works with shipping companies to educate passengers about the prohibition of carrying dangerous goods. "We ask for support from shipping companies to socialize the rules to passengers," added Jendra.
Head of KBPP KSOP Parepare, Nirwan Damang, also gave his appreciation for the implementation of this X-ray. "Through previous inspections, we often found dangerous items such as sharp weapons. With this system, we can be more careful in identifying passengers' belongings," he explained.
He added that the implementation of the X-ray system will be carried out in stages to achieve full coverage. "Although it is not yet 100 percent, we will continue to improve it gradually," concluded Nirwan.
As part of Pelindo Subholding which focuses on non-container terminal operational services, SPMT Parepare is optimistic that this modernization will improve the safety and comfort standards for passengers using the Nusantara Parepare Passenger Terminal services.
