MAKASSAR (iSL News) - The development of Makassar New Port (MNP) initiated by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) is a significant step in improving port infrastructure in Indonesia, especially in the eastern region. This project was built with the aim of strengthening Makassar's position as a strategic logistics and trade center, supporting regional and national economic growth.
Executive Director 4 Pelindo Regional 4, Abdul Azis said that Makassar New Port or also known as TPK New Makassar is designed to have a larger container service capacity than the previous port, with more modern facilities.
The development includes a longer pier, extensive storage areas, and a sophisticated information technology system to improve operational efficiency.
"With better facilities, delivery time and costs are expected to be reduced significantly, and of course can also provide benefits for business actors," said Abdul Azis.
In addition to economic benefits, the project also has the potential to absorb labor, providing opportunities for local communities to engage in the logistics sector and related industries. By improving connectivity between islands and countries, Makassar New Port will strengthen trade relations and open access to wider markets.
The development of Makassar New Port is in line with the government's vision to make Indonesia the world's maritime axis. By strengthening port infrastructure, it is hoped that Indonesia can increase its competitiveness at the international level, as well as accelerate the process of distributing goods to various regions.
“Overall, Makassar New Port is not just an infrastructure project, but also a long-term investment for a brighter future for the Indonesian economy with great potential to drive growth and community welfare,” said Executive Director 4.
Previously, on Monday (October 7, 2024), a group of students under the auspices of an organization, namely the Coordinating Body for the South and West Sulawesi Islamic Student Association (Badko HMI Sulselbar) held a demonstration at the entrance to MNP, which is one of the national strategic projects (PSN).
Responding to the demonstration, Rosfajrin Latuconsina, Manager of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Pelindo Regional 4 said that the Company began the construction process of Makassar New Port since June 2015 by obtaining environmental feasibility based on the Amdal (Environmental Impact Analysis) document issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia through Decree or SK Number 177 of 2010.
According to him, Pelindo has started the licensing process for the construction of MNP since 2010, starting with the preparation of the 2008-2010 Amdal document and the last addendum in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Approval of the Suitability of Marine Spatial Utilization Activities (PKKPRL) for the construction of the MNP questioned by the demonstrators from Badko HMI Sulselbar did not exist. Because Rosfajrin continued, when Pelindo was processing the Amdal, the suitability of marine spatial planning referred to the Regional Regulation (Perda) on the Coastal Area and Small Islands Zoning Plan or commonly abbreviated as RZWP3K issued by the South Sulawesi Provincial Government.
The PKKPRL that the protesters are questioning has only become a requirement in the preparation of an Amdal in the derivative regulations of the Cipta Karya Law Number 11 of 2021. "Meanwhile, the construction of the MNP has started since June 2015, and when the construction began, Pelindo had already obtained an Amdal permit issued in 2010," he said.
