SURABAYA (ISL News) - Nilam Container Terminal continues to strengthen the readiness of its loading and unloading facilities and equipment to support increased capacity and reliability of terminal services. This effort is marked by the addition of one Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane (E-RTG) to support operational activities at the Nilam Container Terminal's stacking yard.
The addition of E-RTG is part of the equipment modernization steps as well as the implementation of loading and unloading technology that is more environmentally friendly and efficient than conventional RTGs.
As of August 2026, the Nilam Container Terminal has handled 368,127 TEUs of container traffic, supported by four container cranes (CC), eight rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), and one reach stacker (RS). The presence of the new E-RTG is expected to further enhance equipment capacity to support the smooth flow of containers at the terminal.
As part of operational preparations, the Tanjung Perak Main Operations Office (KSOP) inspected the E-RTG at the Nilam Container Terminal on Wednesday (September 16). The inspection was conducted to ensure equipment readiness before the planned start of operations in October 2026.
During the activity, Sugeng Adi Prasetyo, General Functional Officer at the Port Section of the Tanjung Perak Main Port Authority, provided a number of inputs related to safety aspects, certification, electrical systems, and operational readiness of equipment.
"All safety features and aspects need to be ensured before the device begins operating, including equipment certification and the readiness of the electrical and other supporting systems, so that the E-RTG can be used safely and optimally," said Sugeng.
He also emphasized the importance of preparedness of mitigation and handling procedures in the event of technical disruptions so that the continuity of terminal operations can be maintained.
Terminal Head of Nilam Container Terminal, Retno Pujianto, welcomed the review and input provided by Tanjung Perak Main KSOP as part of the process of ensuring the readiness of E-RTG before operation.
"The addition of the E-RTG is part of our efforts to improve operational reliability while encouraging the use of more modern and environmentally friendly equipment. We ensure that safety, certification, equipment reliability, electrical systems, and mitigation readiness are prioritized before this equipment begins operating," said Retno.
According to Retno, the presence of E-RTG is expected to contribute to increasing productivity and service quality at the Nilam Container Terminal, while also supporting the transformation of terminal operations towards increasingly efficient and sustainable services.
Through the synergy of Nilam Container Terminal, Tanjung Perak Main KSOP, and all port stakeholders, the operation of E-RTG is expected to further strengthen the smooth flow of containers and support the efficiency of the national logistics chain.
