SURABAYA (ISL News) - In commemoration of the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas (PTP) in collaboration with Pelindo Regional 3 implemented a program to test the exhaust emissions of container transport vehicles operating at Teluk Lamong Terminal (TTL) and Surabaya Container Terminal (TPS). This activity involved the Surabaya City Transportation Agency in carrying out inspections and verification of vehicle emission conditions, as part of efforts to control emissions of freight transport vehicles operating in the terminal area and support the implementation of environmentally friendly operational standards.
The testing will be conducted in two locations: at Teluk Lamong Terminal on August 13, 2026, and at Surabaya Container Terminal on August 18, 2026, with a target inspection of 100 container trucks. The testing will aim to obtain an overview of vehicle exhaust emissions based on required parameters and to identify vehicles requiring maintenance or repairs to their engine and emission control systems.
This program is part of the corporation's commitment to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which addresses climate change. In addition to measuring emissions, this activity also serves as a technical education platform for transportation companies and drivers on the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly to maintain engine performance, combustion efficiency, and exhaust quality.
PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas Corporate Secretary, Widyaswendra, explained that emission testing is a preventive measure to encourage the creation of a port operational ecosystem with lower emissions.
"Through this activity, we not only measure vehicle emissions but also encourage service users and transportation partners to improve environmental compliance in their operations. We hope the test data will provide initial information for vehicle owners to conduct evaluations and maintenance if emissions parameters are found to be below standard," said Widyaswendra.
According to him, container trucks are a crucial component in the logistics chain connecting terminals with hinterland areas. The relatively high operational intensity of these vehicles makes exhaust emissions a crucial aspect of sustainable logistics transportation management.
"With a target of 100 vehicles being inspected at two terminals, we hope this activity will raise awareness among operators and transportation companies regarding the technical condition of their vehicles. Vehicles with well-maintained combustion systems and engines not only support emission control but also contribute to operational efficiency and reliability of container transportation," he continued.
Ahmad Basuni, one of the container truck drivers who participated in the testing, welcomed the emissions test. The driver, who has been in the profession for nine years, described the testing process as simple and did not disrupt vehicle operations.
"The emissions testing process is easy and doesn't take long. I think this kind of activity is good and should be done regularly, because it helps us as drivers understand the emissions status of our vehicles," said Ahmad.
Through the "Freedom from Emissions" program, PTP, in collaboration with Pelindo Regional 3, is striving to drive a transformation in logistics operations toward lower emissions. This initiative also represents the company's commitment to supporting environmental management in port areas and realizing more efficient, safe, and sustainable logistics activities.
