SURABAYA (ISL News) - In commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, PT Pelindo Marine Service (Pelindo Marine) held a Mariners Mengajar program for children in RW 09, Tanah Kali Kedinding Village, Kenjeran District, Surabaya. Carrying the theme "Kenjeran Wani Resik", this activity invited participants to learn the importance of protecting the environment from an early age. Children were also invited to be creative through coloring comics with a tugboat theme as a means of introducing the maritime world.
PT Pelindo Marine Service's Director of Finance, Human Resources, and Risk Management, Lia Indi Agustiana, explained that the program is part of the company's contribution to supporting character education, environmental awareness, and maritime literacy for the younger generation. "Through the Mariners Mengajar program, we want to share knowledge and instill positive values in children from an early age. We hope they will not only understand the importance of protecting the environment but also become familiar with the maritime world, which is an important part of Indonesia as an archipelagic nation," she said.
The head of RW 09 in Tanah Kali Kedinding Village, Yoyok Soehendro, expressed his appreciation for Pelindo Marine's commitment to the community in his area. He stated that the initiative builds on a number of previous company programs, including Kenjeran Wani Geni through firefighting training and Kenjeran Wani Resik through the provision of Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL). "Tanah Kali Kedinding Village is located adjacent to the banks of the Kali Kedinding River. Therefore, education about cleanliness and environmental awareness is crucial for the community," Yoyok said.
Meanwhile, Ery Ferriati, the organizing committee member for the 81st Indonesian Independence Day celebrations at Pelindo Marine, added that the commemoration of Independence Day serves as a momentum for fostering positive habits in society, including among children. "The spirit of independence can be realized through simple actions, such as getting into the habit of disposing of trash properly and maintaining a clean environment," Ferriati explained.
The participants were also enthusiastic. Rizky, a third-grade elementary school student, expressed her delight at the activity. "I'm happy to be able to participate in this activity. Besides coloring pictures of ships, I learned that tugboats have many functions in assisting other ships in the harbor," Rizky said.
Through the Mariners Mengajar program, Pelindo Marine hopes to continue contributing to improving the quality of public education, fostering environmental awareness, and introducing the maritime world to the younger generation.
