MUARA GEMBONG BEKASI (ISL News) - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo is strengthening its commitment to environmental sustainability by supporting the restoration of the coastal ecosystem in the Fisherman's Village, Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency, West Java. This coastal area, which borders the Java Sea and serves as the estuary of the Citarum River, frequently faces environmental pressures, ranging from tidal flooding, abrasion, and limited access to clean water after flooding.
To commemorate World Environment Day, Pelindo collaborated with Bukalapak and PT Visi Jaya Indonesia (VJI) on the Akar Kebaikan Vol. 4 program, planting hundreds of mangrove seedlings in the critical coastal area of Muara Gembong on Tuesday (June 9, 2026). This program was supported by the Benih Baik Indonesia Foundation and involved employees from all three agencies.
The mangrove planting is part of a collaborative effort to strengthen coastal resilience. Mangroves serve a vital role as natural protection against abrasion and tidal flooding, as a habitat for coastal biota, and as a carbon sink. Planting mangrove seedlings in the area is estimated to have the potential to sequester approximately 7.5 tons of carbon per year.
Group Head of Corporate Sustainability, Usman Sahroni, said that Pelindo's involvement in this program is part of the company's commitment to providing sustainable benefits to the environment and coastal communities.
"Sustainability isn't just about port operations, but also about how companies can contribute to the environment and surrounding communities. The strategic collaboration between Bukalapak, VJI, and Pelindo is expected to expand the positive impact of the Akar Kebaikan program," said Usman.
According to Usman, coastal preservation requires cross-sector collaboration. Therefore, collaboration between businesses, communities, and the public is crucial to ensure environmental programs don't remain mere ceremonial activities but can have a real and sustainable impact.
"Coastal restoration requires consistency. This mangrove planting is a small step that needs to be continuously maintained, cared for, and its impact expanded. Pelindo will continue to support initiatives that align with the Pelindo Peduli spirit, particularly programs that address environmental aspects and the community's basic needs," he added.
Bukalapak Director Victor Putra Lesmana stated that the Akar Kebaikan Vol. 4 program demonstrates Bukalapak's ongoing commitment to supporting environmental conservation with its partners.
"Through the planting of mangrove seedlings in Muara Gembong, which has been underway for several years, it is hoped that the coastline affected by abrasion can be restored and the benefits can be felt by local residents in a sustainable manner," said Victor.
In addition to mangrove planting, the Akar Kebaikan Vol. 4 program also includes the construction of a 130-meter-deep borehole to help hundreds of families experiencing limited access to clean water following the floods. This facility is expected to support the restoration of the local community's basic needs.
Bukalapak, along with its partners, also distributed hundreds of clothing items to fishing families in Muara Gembong. This series of activities is part of its support for the social and ecological recovery of coastal communities impacted by environmental pressures.
Through this collaboration, Pelindo affirms its commitment to continuously supporting sustainability programs that directly impact the community and the environment. The coastal ecosystem restoration efforts in Muara Gembong are expected to serve as an example of cross-sector collaboration in maintaining environmental balance while strengthening the resilience of coastal communities.
