SURABAYA (ISL News) - PT Pelindo Marine Service (Pelindo Marine) held a Mariners Teaching activity at SMP Labschool Unesa 1 Surabaya on October 28, 2025. Amidst the growing issue of climate change and extreme hot weather that hit the city of Surabaya, this activity aims to foster environmental awareness, educate the importance of maintaining marine ecosystems and introduce the maritime world to students.
The event, part of a series of events commemorating Pelindo Marine's 14th anniversary, featured company directors and ship captains as speakers. The Secretary of the Surabaya City Education Office, Putri Aisyah Mahanani, SE, who attended the event, expressed her appreciation for the initiative. She believes that collaboration between industry and education is crucial for developing a quality generation. "I truly appreciate Pelindo Marine for commemorating its anniversary in such an extraordinary and meaningful way. This event is highly relevant in supporting the birth of a quality generation, in line with the Government's vision to build a golden generation by 2045," Putri said.
As a form of real support for the world of education, Pelindo Marine also provided scholarship assistance through the Surabaya City Education Office to 28 students from five Junior High Schools. The Director of Finance, HR, and Risk Management of PT Pelindo Marine Service, Lia Indi Agustiana, in her material invited the younger generation to care for the environment through small actions. "We must start caring about protecting the environment through small actions, because from those small actions will come a big impact for the earth. I remember a quote from the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, who said that he only needed 10 young people to shake the world. I believe, if 10 Spelsa Lovers (the name for Labschool Unesa 1 Junior High School students) move together, they will have an extraordinary impact on the future of the earth," she said.
The students' enthusiasm was evident in the Sailors Tell Stories session presented by the Captain of the Jayanegara 304 Tugboat, Capt. Catur Budha Hanugrah Negari. He reminded them that caring for the ocean is a way of honoring our ancestors' heritage. "Our ancestors were formidable sailors, masters of the oceans since the Majapahit era. Protecting the ocean from pollution is not only a form of environmental concern, but also a manifestation of our love for our ancestors' heritage, which must be preserved for future generations," said Capt. Catur.
The principal of Labschool Unesa 1 Middle School, Muh. Miftahul Arif, welcomed the activity. "The children not only gain new insights into the maritime world, but also learn the important values of environmental protection," he said.
Through the Mariners Mengajar program, Pelindo Marine hopes to foster a spirit of environmental stewardship among the younger generation as guardians of Bumi Majapahit, a symbol of the Indonesian archipelago's maritime glory. By starting with small steps, Pelindo Marine encourages everyone to contribute to the future.
