BELAWAN MEDAN (ISL News) - Belawan Port managed by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), through Subholding PT Pelindo Multi Terminal (SPMT) is one of the points of visit in the diplomatic and training trip of the sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian Navy training ship known as one of the most famous classic sailing ships in the world. The Italian Navy Sailing Ship docked during Friday and Saturday, November 1-2, 2024 at Pier 114, Belawan Port.
The arrival of the 100 m long & 3410 GT tonnage ship in Belawan is part of a friendship cruise involving a number of countries, including Indonesia, to strengthen bilateral relations and introduce Italian maritime culture.
The commander of the Amerigo Vespucci ship, Captain Navy Giuseppe Lai, said that the ship, which has been operating since 1931, is a training ship for Italian Navy officer cadets. "In addition to its role as a training facility, this ship also serves as a 'floating embassy', a form of naval diplomacy that introduces Italian culture to the world," he explained.
Through its official website, Amerigo Vespucci opens the opportunity for the general public to visit the ship which is open on Friday, November 1, 2024 at 16.30 - 19.30 WIB and Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 10.00 - 12.30 WIB and 14.30 - 17.00 WIB.
Visitors in attendance had the opportunity to see the ship up close, while some invited guests had the opportunity to climb aboard the ship and interact with the crew and cadets.
"We warmly welcome the arrival of the Amerigo Vespucci sailing ship at Belawan Port. Pelindo Multi Terminal also supports the visit of this ship and hopes that this visit will inspire the community, especially the younger generation, to love the maritime world more and understand the importance of preserving the sea," said Farid Chairmawan, VP of Corporate Communications & Protocol of PT Pelindo Multi Terminal.
Belawan is the 24th port visited by Amerigo Vespucci in 20 countries during its 16-month journey that began in 2023, including Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Rio de Janeiro. Before Belawan, the ship stopped at Marina Bay, Singapore, and after that will stop at Phuket, Thailand.
