SURABAYA (ISL News) - PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) recorded an 11.79% month-on-month growth in container throughput in July 2026 compared to the previous month. Container volume increased from 116,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in June to 130,000 TEUs in July. The positive performance in July 2026 was driven entirely by the contribution of international container flows. By comparison, international container flows reached 116,000 TEUs in June 2026.
Meanwhile, based on a year-on-year comparison, international container throughput in the January-July 2026 period was 807 thousand TEUs, a 6.94% correction compared to the same period last year of 867 thousand TEUs. Overall, container throughput—both domestic and international—was corrected by 8.59% compared to the same period last year, from 908 thousand TEUs to 830 thousand TEUs. The year-on-year (YoY) throughput correction is primarily a consequence of the transition and integration process of new equipment, namely 4 units of Electric Quay Container Crane (E-QCC) and 14 units of Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry (E-RTG). The installation, testing, and operational adaptation processes require time for productivity to gradually reach optimal levels. The operation of new equipment in line with the optimal operation of existing equipment, supported by reliable supporting resources, will be able to increase capacity and operational performance sustainably in the coming period.
In terms of foreign trade, export flows in July experienced month-on-month growth of 20.54%, from 57,000 TEUs to 68,000 TEUs. Imports also increased by 3.39%, from 59,000 TEUs to 61,000 TEUs.
The ratio of export and import container flows from January to July 2026 was 49% (400,000 TEUs) for export containers and 51% (407,000 TEUs) for import containers. Compared to the same period in 2025, the ratio of export and import container flows in 2026 remained unchanged. The 49% export share in 2025 contributed 428,000 TEUs to container flows. Meanwhile, import container flows accounted for 51% of the total from January to July, amounting to 439,000 TEUs.
In terms of productivity, TPS recorded an average loading and unloading performance of 51 boxes/ship/hour during the first two months of 2026, exceeding the minimum standard set by the Ministry of Transportation through the Tanjung Perak Main KSOP, which is 48 boxes/ship/hour. Furthermore, TPS successfully maintained its dominant position in the international container market with a market share of 83% at Tanjung Perak Port.
TPS Corporate Secretary, Erika A. Palupi, stated that the 11.79% growth in container traffic in July 2026 indicates that trade activity through TPS continues to move positively. This increase was primarily driven by international containers, both exports and imports, reflecting the continued confidence of business players in TPS's services and operational capacity.
"TPS is committed to maintaining reliable, safe, and sustainable operational performance. With loading and unloading productivity consistently exceeding regulatory standards and an 83% international market share at Tanjung Perak Port, we will continue to support the smooth operation of the national logistics chain and the growth of Indonesian trade," he said.
Meanwhile, from the perspective of service users, Boy G. Rahman, Deputy Chairman of the East Java branch of the Indonesian Export Companies Association (GPEI), stated that the 20.54% increase in export container flows in July 2026 compared to the previous month is a positive signal for the national export sector, particularly from East Java and Eastern Indonesia. This condition indicates that international market demand for Indonesian export products remains well-maintained amid ongoing global economic challenges.
"We appreciate TPS's efforts in maintaining smooth logistics flows and modernizing terminal equipment. These steps are crucial for improving port competitiveness and providing service certainty for exporters. Moving forward, synergy between port operators, business players, and the government needs to be continuously strengthened to ensure continued export growth momentum and greater contribution to the national economy," he said.
