SURABAYA (ISL News) - To enhance and maintain biodiversity, PT Terminal Teluk Lamong (TTL) is collaborating with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Purwodadi Botanical Gardens to conduct a series of comprehensive ecological research projects. This science-based research framework focuses on vegetation inventory, ecological studies, and analysis of the adaptability of coastal plants.

This series of activities, which will take place from mid-July to August 2026, is a strategic step to support the implementation of environmentally friendly terminals based on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) while simultaneously strengthening the carrying capacity of coastal biodiversity in a sustainable manner.

The Head of the BRIN Purwodadi Botanical Gardens Research Team in TTL, Sugeng Budiharta, appreciated the harmonious collaboration in the field between research institutions and the port industry. "We are very pleased to see the enthusiasm and close collaboration between BRIN and PT Terminal Teluk Lamong. This research is not just an ecological analysis in TTL, but a form of shared concern in maintaining coastal ecosystems so that biodiversity remains sustainable amidst the rapid growth of the port industry," said Sugeng.

The series of activities began with mapping and inventorying existing plant species in the Teluk Lamong Container Terminal (TPK Teluk Lamong) area to record vegetation diversity and density. The research team also collected leaf and twig samples for ecophysiological character analysis, including wet weight measurements and Leaf Area (LA) photographs. They also collected samples for leaf anatomy analysis.

To complete the ecological picture of the terrestrial area, measurements of microclimate parameters including air temperature, humidity, light intensity, and wind speed were also conducted. Furthermore, the research focus was expanded to the mangrove ecosystem through studies of coastal vegetation health and soil sampling in the area to determine the nutrient profile and the carrying capacity of the plant habitat.

Muhammad Syukur, Operations Director of PT Terminal Teluk Lamong, welcomed this scientific collaboration and emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony between terminal operations and ecosystem sustainability. "This joint research with BRIN can produce crucial data that will allow us to further support the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles at TTL," Syukur explained.

"We want to ensure that every terminal operational activity always provides space for the surrounding biodiversity to thrive and develop sustainably," added Syukur.

Mapping vegetation and soil conditions serves as the primary scientific basis for designing green landscapes that support coastal flora habitats. Furthermore, anatomical and ecophysiological testing can help understand the resilience and diversity of plant species to salinity levels and microclimate changes in coastal areas. Therefore, this synergy is beneficial in ensuring terminal operations align with coastal biodiversity protection efforts while also supporting a beautiful and healthy work environment within PT Terminal Teluk Lamong.
