SURABAYA (ISL News) - Commitment to coastal environmental preservation continues to be demonstrated through concrete actions. PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) distributed 3,000 mangrove seedlings to be planted in the Sontoh Laut area, Greges, Asem Rowo District, Surabaya City, on Sunday (May 10, 2026). This activity is part of the joint movement "Green the Coast, Preserve Life" involving government officials, state-owned enterprises, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), academics, communities, and the local community.
The 3,000 mangrove seedlings planted in Sontoh Laut are part of the TPS's independent planting program of 10,000 mangrove seedlings, which began in October 2025. All seedlings were ready for harvest in May 2026 and will be gradually distributed to support the rehabilitation of Surabaya's coastal areas. Of the total harvest, 3,000 seedlings were distributed specifically to the Sontoh Laut area, Asem Rowo District.
The mangrove planting activity began at 6:00 a.m. WIB and continued until completion, with the gathering point at the Sontoh Laut tourist area. The planting method used a stake system, with three mangrove seedlings planted on each stake for optimal and sustainable growth. Approximately 400 participants took part in the activity.
In addition to distributing harvested mangrove seedlings, TPS also supported the program by providing 1,000 stakes and food for participants. The food was purchased from MSMEs in the Sontoh Laut area, with each participant given a coupon to exchange for a food package. This demonstrates the company's commitment to supporting environmental programs, community empowerment, and sustainability.
TPS Corporate Secretary, Erika Asih Palupi, said that this mangrove seed planting and distribution program is a concrete manifestation of TPS's role in maintaining coastal ecosystems and supporting sustainable development.
"Since October 2025, TPS has planted 10,000 mangrove seedlings as part of our commitment to environmental conservation. This month, these seedlings are ready for harvest and will begin to be distributed to several coastal areas. Of these, 3,000 seedlings were distributed to Sontoh Laut, Asem Rowo District, as an effort to strengthen coastal protection and Surabaya's marine ecosystem," said Erika Asih Palupi.
Erika added that mangroves have a strategic role not only as natural protection from abrasion and the impacts of climate change, but also as a life support for coastal communities.
"Mangrove conservation requires long-term commitment and collaboration from various parties. We hope the synergy created through this activity will provide sustainable ecological, social, and economic benefits for the community and the environment," he added.
Through this mangrove planting activity in Sontoh Laut, TPS hopes to continue contributing to maintaining the balance of the coastal ecosystem, supporting the development of eco-tourism, and leaving a greener and more sustainable environment for future generations.
