JAKARTA INDONESIA (ISL News) - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the cumulative value of Indonesia's exports in the January-December 2024 period reached USD264.70 billion or increased by 2.29 percent compared to the same period in 2023, while cumulative non-oil and gas exports reached USD248.83 billion or increased by 2.46 percent.
During January-December 2024, Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports according to the manufacturing industry sector increased by 5.33 percent compared to January-December 2023, contributed by an increase in precious metal exports. Exports of agricultural, forestry, and fisheries products increased by 29.81 percent due to an increase in coffee exports, while exports of mining and other products fell by 10.20 percent, contributed by a decrease in coal exports.
Founder & CEO of Supply Chain Indonesia (SCI) Setijadi said that increasing exports of agricultural, forestry and fisheries product groups needs to be a driver for further export increases considering that Indonesia has many types of products/commodities in that group.
Considering that some types of products/commodities in the group are perishable, an end-to-end cold chain implementation is needed. For storage, in addition to cold storage, several special technologies are also needed, such as controlled atmosphere storage (CAS).
Setijadi also highlighted the need for packaging and packing technology that affects the condition of products/commodities, as well as the consolidation process to improve the efficiency and economy of scale of the product/commodity transportation and storage process due to the relatively small production capacity of each business actor and the spread of their regions.
Downstreaming of the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors is very important and needs to be planned comprehensively as an industrial development strategy that focuses on processing and adding value to products to improve product quality, quantity and competitiveness.
REGIONAL CONTRIBUTION
Head of the Supply Chain Management Laboratory, Industrial Engineering Study Program, Widyatama University, Verani Hartati highlighted the uneven contribution of exports between regions.
Based on BPS data, three provinces contributed up to 33.65 percent of all national exports in January-December 2024, namely West Java which contributed USD37,872.3 million (14.31 percent), East Java USD25,716.1 million (9.72 percent), and East Kalimantan USD25,461.5 million (9.62 percent).
Verani encourages increased exports based on potential agricultural, forestry, and fishery products or commodities in each region. This is not only for export purposes, but also for the economic growth of each region.
The regional export improvement program must be supported by increasing accessibility and logistics connectivity carried out synergistically between ministries/institutions, both for sea transportation and hinterland transportation.
Improvement of logistics connectivity must be done based on supply chain mapping through identification of supply areas and export destination countries. In addition, it is necessary to develop appropriate hubs & spokes, including the determination of export gates.
