Tanjung Priok Port is Indonesia's largest and busiest port, strategically serving as a key gateway for national and international trade. As a key logistics hub, Tanjung Priok serves the majority of container, freight, and passenger traffic that supports Indonesia's economic activity.
With the ever-increasing complexity of activities, an institution is needed that can bridge the interests of the government, port operators, service users, the business community, and the public. It is in this context that the Tanjung Priok Port Council becomes crucial and relevant.
Normatively, the Port Council is established to provide input, considerations, and recommendations to port operators to improve services, safety, security, and port development. However, in practice, the Port Council's function should not be understood as merely an administrative complement. It must become a strategic forum capable of accommodating various stakeholder interests while overseeing the direction of port development in accordance with national needs.
The Tanjung Priok Port Council's primary urgency lies in its ability to foster coordination among stakeholders. Modern ports involve numerous institutions, including the Harbormaster and Port Authority (KSOP), terminal operators, shipping companies, user associations, customs and quarantine agencies, and local governments. Without an effective coordination forum, the potential for overlapping policies and operational obstacles increases. The Port Council can serve as a platform for dialogue that encourages collaborative problem-solving.
Second , the Port Council plays a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of the Port Master Plan (RIP). As a long-term planning document, the RIP serves as a reference for the development of port areas, infrastructure, and logistics connectivity. The Port Council can ensure that any developments align with the port's overall vision, are non-partisan, and consider the interests of service users and the surrounding community. Without oversight and constructive input, port development risks losing its strategic direction.
Third , the Port Council's presence is crucial to boosting Tanjung Priok Port's competitiveness. Competition between ports is now not only national but also regional. Ports in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam continue to innovate to attract international trade. Therefore, the Port Council needs to actively provide recommendations on service efficiency, business process digitization, logistics cost reduction, and service quality improvements to ensure Tanjung Priok's competitiveness as a regional maritime hub.
Beyond the economic aspect, the Port Council also plays a strategic role in maintaining a balance between port development and the environmental and social interests of the community. Increasingly dense port activity has the potential to impact the coastal environment, traffic congestion, and the spatial planning of the surrounding area. Through its consultative and representative role, the Port Council can serve as a communication bridge between port management and the community to ensure sustainable development.
In the era of national logistics transformation, the challenges facing Tanjung Priok Port are increasingly complex. Digitalization, supply chain integration, the transition to a green port, and demands for service efficiency require participatory decision-making based on shared interests. In this context, the Port Council must not be merely a ceremonial forum but rather function as an active, independent, and responsive institution to the various dynamics that arise.
Ultimately, the urgency of the Tanjung Priok Port Council lies not only in its existence as a regulatory mandate, but also as an instrument of good port governance. Its strategic role in bridging interests, overseeing development, increasing competitiveness, and maintaining port sustainability makes the Port Council a crucial element in realizing Tanjung Priok as a world-class port capable of supporting sustainable national economic growth.
