Pelindo Launches Onshore Power Supply Services in Tanjung Priok, Encouraging Green Port Transformation

JAKARTA (ISL News) -  PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo launched its Onshore Power Supply (OPS) service today, Wednesday (September 16th), at the Nusantara Multipurpose Pier, PNP Pier 004 Terminal, Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta. This 500 kVA onshore power facility allows docked vessels to obtain electricity from shore, thus reducing the use of auxiliary engines.

 
The launch of the OPS service facility was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Kementerian ESDM), the Tanjung Priok Main Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP), the Tanjung Priok Port Police, the Ship Owners Association (INSA), PT PLN (Persero) and the management of the Pelindo Group.

 
"We are confident that the implementation of OPS at Tanjung Priok Port can become a best practice and become part of the transformation of ports in Indonesia towards greener, more efficient, competitive, and sustainable ports," said the Head of the Tanjung Priok Main KSOP, Capt. Heru Susanto MM.

 
The operation of the OPS is one of Pelindo's steps in driving the transformation of Tanjung Priok Port into a green port. In addition to reducing fuel consumption while vessels are docked, the use of onshore electricity can reduce auxiliary engine running hours, maintenance requirements, exhaust emissions, noise, and vibrations in the dock area.

 
Pelindo President Director Achmad Muchtasyar said the development of the OPS is part of Pelindo's efforts to build a port ecosystem that is increasingly green, efficient, and ready to face developments in global maritime industry standards.

 
"OPS isn't just about replacing ships' power sources from generators with onshore electricity. It's a concrete step in transforming Tanjung Priok Port into a green port, providing more efficient, cleaner, and more reliable energy. We want to build a port ecosystem that is not only more productive but also more sustainable," said Achmad.

 
The development of OPS is also supported by PT PLN (Persero) as part of a collaboration to provide a reliable electricity ecosystem to support the energy transition in the port area.

 
"PLN is ready to support the transformation of the port sector by providing a reliable electricity supply for berthing vessels. Through this collaboration, we aim to boost productivity by saving maritime businesses and optimizing port activities, while simultaneously reducing emissions," said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo.

 
OPS operates through a shore-to-ship power scheme. When a vessel is docked and connected to the facility, the vessel's electrical needs, such as hotel load, reefer, pump, and other operational needs, can be supplied via the onshore power grid, allowing the ship's auxiliary engines to be shut off while the OPS is in use. 

 
Based on testing, OPS implementation is estimated to reduce ship exhaust emissions by up to 75 percent. Local emissions from ship stacks, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and particulates, can also be eliminated as long as the ship is fully powered by onshore power. 

 
In terms of efficiency, measurements on two test vessels indicate potential energy cost savings of approximately 40 to 64 percent compared to using marine generators, depending on the engine type and fuel used. Reducing auxiliary engine running hours can also reduce maintenance requirements and extend engine overhaul intervals. 

 
In its operations, Pelindo has assigned PT Energi Pelabuhan Indonesia (EPI) to manage the OPS services. As part of the Pelindo Group, EPI manages the port area's internal electricity distribution network while ensuring the readiness and reliability of the electricity supply from shore to vessels.

 
PT EPI President Director Andriyuda Siahaan stated that the OPS facility at Pier 004 has undergone a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and was successfully tested on a commercial vessel in July 2026. 

 
"As the operator, PT EPI ensures reliable electricity supply and technical readiness for services at the docks. OPS also offers more scalable energy services for users based on electricity consumption and required service levels," said Andriyuda.

 
The launch of the OPS service at Tanjung Priok Port marks the initial stage of broader service development. Following the pilot and commercialization phase at Pier 004, Pelindo will gradually expand to other terminals with capacities tailored to vessel needs.

 
In the development roadmap, Pelindo directs the development of OPS in Tanjung Priok to 24 units by 2027. In the long term, the model is planned to be gradually replicated to multipurpose terminals, public docks, and other ports, with an indicative national development roadmap of up to 123 OPS units by 2050.

 
"From Tanjung Priok, we want to build a foundation to expand energy transition solutions to other terminals and ports in Indonesia. Future ports must be increasingly productive and efficient, while also being able to grow while maintaining environmental sustainability," Achmad concluded.
